A plain 4-inch slab runs $941 – $1,569 at 10x10, $2,874 – $4,789 at 20x20 and $9,664 – $16,106 at 30x40 at national prices, the same figures as the size pages. Enter your project and the quote you were given; the verdict shows whether it is unusually low, fair, slightly high or high, which line items could explain the gap, and what to ask before you sign.
How a plain slab is priced here: broom finish, 4-inch gravel base, wire mesh under 500 sq ft and #4 rebar from 500 sq ft up, the same as the size pages. Other project types use that page's defaults. Uncheck “reinforcement” if the quote has none.
How the verdict works
The engine prices your inputs the same way the slab calculator does, using BLS OEWS May 2025 labor rates for your ZIP where available and national material prices marked estimated. A quote below 15% under the low end is flagged as unusually low, anything up to the high end is fair, up to 15% over it is slightly high, and beyond that is high. The band is ±25% at national level and narrower with local data.
What we store
Each check saves the project type, size, ZIP, quoted amount and verdict, with no name, email, phone or IP address. In aggregate these checks calibrate the regional factors on the data sources page, which is why the tool is free.
Typical reasons a quote is high or low
- Demolition and haul-away of an old slab, which many quotes include and the calculator prices separately.
- Permits, engineering or a required inspection.
- Site access that needs a concrete pump or hand-carrying.
- A decorative finish, thicker slab, or rebar instead of mesh.
- Low quotes that skip the base, the reinforcement, or insurance.
